Two arrested for theft of an ATM after police chase, crash Wednesday

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock police arrested two suspects wanted for robbery after leading police on a chase and crashing on University Ave. Wednesday afternoon. 

Mark Melendez, 32, and Amy Martinez, 33, are accused of robbing an ATM out of Kwik Mart near Boston Ave. and an additional recent burglary at Memphis Laundry.

An officer recognized the suspect vehicle related to the ATM theft near 42nd and Ave. P. After calling for backup, the officer, in an unmarked car, followed the suspects until the driver recognized they were being followed and fled. 

Officers chased the suspects down 38th to Ave. Q. The suspect vehicle continued west on 38th, reportedly increasing speed and distance from officers. Officers approaching University were able to see that the vehicle had crashed into a pickup at the intersection. Police report the suspects were seen running from the scene. 

Officers continued the chase and were able to arrest Melendez and Martinez shortly after.

The driver of the pickup was taken to Covenant Medical Center with minor injuries. 

Melendez is charged with tampering with physical evidence, evading in a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, failed to render aid, forgery and an outstanding felony warrant. 

Martinez is charged with evading in a vehicle and evading arrest.
