Coleman garners two more midseason All-America mentions

Posted: Updated:

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior defensive back Douglas Coleman III was named to two additional Midseason All-America teams Wednesday as he was recognized by the Associated Press and the Sporting News.
Coleman, the nation's leader with six interceptions this season, was previously recognized by the staff of The Athletic on Tuesday alongside teammate Jordyn Brooks, who was a second team honoree by the publication.
Tech enters this weekend's bout with Iowa State as the Big 12 leader with 12 takeaways, half of which have resulted from Coleman interceptions. He has picked off each of his six passes in the past four games against the likes of Arizona and then tree ranked foes in Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Baylor.
Dating back to the start of the 2000 campaign, Coleman is the only Red Raider to pick off six passes through the first six games of a season and the first to do so nationally since Shawun Lurry of Northern Illinois in 2015. No other player from a power-five conference has more than four interceptions this season entering this weekend's slate of games.

His successful start has already placed him on the Tech single-season and career charts where he ranks tied for seventh with six interceptions this year and tied for 10th with nine over his career. He needs five more interceptions this year to match the single-season school record of 11 that was set by Elmer Tarbox way back in 1938.
Coleman, a native of Zachery, Louisiana, is also second on the team with 38 tackles as he has started at safety in all six games and regularly participates on special teams, a key role for Red Raiders under head coach Matt Wells.
Kickoff between Tech and Iowa State is slated for 11 a.m. Saturday morning inside Jones AT&T Stadium. Coverage will be provided nationally on FOX Sports 1 and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
