LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech graduate transfer Chris Clarke has been selected as the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year, while Davide Moretti, Jahmi'us Ramsey and Clarke were each named All-Big 12 Preseason Honorable Mention. The honors were announced on Wednesday after a vote by head coaches who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
The Big 12 Preseason Awards list was headlined by Preseason Player of the Year Udoka Azubulke (Kansas), Clarke and Oscar Tshiebwe (West Virginia) being named the Preseason Freshman of the Year. The Preseason All-Big 12 Team consists of Tristan Clark (Baylor), Tyrese Halliburton (Iowa State), Azubulke, Devon Dotson (Kansas) and Desmond Bane (TCU).
Clarke transferred to Texas Tech this season after averaging 9.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.03 steals in 79 games played at Virginia Tech. With the Hokies, Clarke would average 8.2 points and 6.3 rebounds as a junior after going for 11.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in his sophomore season. For his career, he has scored 728 points, secured 517 rebounds and has 210 assists in his collegiate career.
Moretti was named a Preseason Honorable Mention selection after earning All-Big 12 Third Team last season as a sophomore, while Ramsey is a freshmen for the Red Raiders after helping lead Duncanville to the Class 6A State Championship last year. Moretti led the nation last year by shooting 92.1 percent from the free-throw line and also added 11.5 points per game for the Red Raiders. He finished conference play shooting 53.5 percent on 3-pointers, 53.5 percent from the field and 93.1 percent from the free-throw line to become the first 50/50/90 shooter in Big 12 history. Moretti was named to the Bob Cousy Award Watch List for the nation's top point guard on Monday.
Tshiebwe is the second McDonald's All-American to enroll at West Virginia as a freshman. He averaged 23.2 points as a senior while leading Kennedy Catholic High School to a 27-3 record and the 6A state title. Tshiebwe is the ?rst Mountaineer picked as the preseason freshman of the year since West Virginia joined the Big 12 in 2012-13.
Joining Aubuike on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team is his teammate Devon Dotson along with Tristan Clark (Baylor), Tyrese Haliburton (Iowa State) and Desmond Bane (TCU). At the conclusion of last season, Bane was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection while Dotson was named to the third team.
The Big 12 will tip off 2019-20 with its annual media day, slated for Wednesday, October 23 at Sprint Center in Kansas City - site of the 2020 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship. Live coverage will be available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. The Red Raiders will be represented at the media day by Clarke, Holyfield, Moretti, Edwards and Ramsey.
Texas Tech begins its season against Eastern Illinois on Tuesday, Nov. 5 and Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Nov. 9 for a two-game home stand at the United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders are currently on a 47-game non-conference home winning streak coming into the season and went 14-4 in conference play last season to share the Big 12 regular-season title with Kansas State.
