Woman charged with aggravated assault, arrested after leading police on short chase

LUBBOCK, Texas -

A woman accused of striking her husband in the head with a pistol was arrested after leading police on a short pursuit Tuesday evening. 

Police responded to a shots fired call near 82nd and Ave. D. Police report when Leticia Lopez, 23, struck her husband a round went off. No one was hurt. Officers and EMS arrived and tended to the victim’s injuries.

Police report Lopez ran from the scene with her child and the firearm, then quickly dropped the child off at a family members house.

Soon after, she called the Lubbock Police Department threatening to commit suicide. The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office and DPS attempted to make contact with Lopez. Police were led on a short pursuit until they were notified of her suicidal threats. The chase was canceled and a DPS Helicopter monitored her movements.

Lopez returned to the scene to speak with negotiators, became agitated and left the scene. Police report she drove to a family members house who tried talking her into giving him the gun. While Lopez was talking to him a news vehicle approached her. Lopez became more agitated and followed the news vehicle trying to make contact with them.

Lopez returned to the original scene where she fired off several rounds in the air before putting the gun down, according to police. Officers utilized less lethal rounds and placed her in custody. She was cleared by UMC and transported to the Lubbock County Jail. 

Lopez is charged with aggravated assault and discharge of a firearm in a municipality.
