LUBBOCK, Texas -

Former District Judge Brad Underwood, whose career spanned four decades and was the first judge in the 364th District Court when it was created in 1989,  died Sunday.

"Judge Underwood was a friend, and his loss today is a loss not just of a friend, but for the legal community of Lubbock," Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish said. "He served Lubbock County very well."

Judge Underwood served on the bench of the 364th District Court for 25 years and retired in 2014. Prior to that, he served as judge for Lubbock County Court at Law No. 2 and worked in the District Attorney's Office.

"He treated both sides the same, he was very respectful," Matt Powell, former Lubbock County District Attorney, said. "He had a great temperament, when everybody else was losing their temper and losing their cool, Judge Underwood was kind of steady."

After retiring, Underwood continued to serve as a visiting judge. William Eichman II, the current 364th District Court Judge, was elected to replace him. He said Underwood taught him many important lessons about being a judge.

"Very caring, very helpful in the transition after he decided to retire," Judge Eichman said. "I met with him on a couple occasions. I had his phone number. He said 'always call if you need any assistance, I'd be glad to talk to you about it.' That's just the kind of person he was."

Eichman called Underwood one of the most well-respected and intelligent jurists in this part of the country.

"He was not afraid to make the right decision even if it was not the popular decision on the bench." he said. "We'll all miss him, on behalf of all the judges in Lubbock County you know our prayers will be there for his wife Phyllis, and the rest of his family."

Funeral arrangements have been made for Friday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at First Christian Church.

Judge Brad Underwood was 65.
