LUBBOCK, Texas -

Hundreds of people celebrated the life of Louis Kelley Friday morning at Estacado High School.

He coached football for 25 years at Estacado, winning 15 district titles and leading generations of young men.

Jerry Gray, a college football hall of famer and former All-Pro NFL defensive back, said he recalls his first memory of playing for Coach Kelley at Estacado.

"When I came here as a sophomore, you would walk the halls and say, man, there is a mystique that's over this high school, and that was Coach Kelley," Gray said.

Gray is currently the defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings, as he said his inspiration to be on the sideline came from his old head coach.

"A coach is someone who tells you what you don't want to hear, and they show you what you don't want to see, so you can be what you always want to be, and to me, that's what Coach Kelley did," Gray said.

Even though he coached thousands of kids throughout his career, Gray said Kelley made every effort to have a personal relationship with each.

That is why Gray said speaking at Kelley's memorial service is the hardest thing he's ever done.

"He supported me through all my life and everything I've done. You look back and say, what is that? To me, that's unselfishness, that's caring, that's teaching you how to be a leader, teaching you how to be a man, teaching you how to grow, and teaching you how to support others before yourself," Gray said.
