HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE: Texas 25, Texas Tech 17
Early kills from Hill, Kanas, Allison White and Dugan kept the Red Raiders within one point of the Longhorns, but a quick 3-0 run for the home team put Tech in a 9-5 hole. Dugan and Karrington Jones teamed up for Tech's first block of the match to close the gap, 14-10, but Texas went on to win the next six points. Dugan's third kill of the match broke up the run and Hill shorted the gap further with Tech's first ace of the day. After Texas moved to set point, the Red Raiders rallied thanks to a pair of Kanas kills, but they could not recover and dropped the first set, 25-17, while hitting .286.
SET TWO: Texas 25, Texas Tech 18
The Red Raiders took advantage of a Longhorn service error for their first point of the set and Kanas registered Tech's first kill of the set to shorten its deficit to 5-2. Cadi Boyer picked up her first kill of the match for Tech's fifth point and Dugan brought the match within three points after she laid down her fourth kill of the day. A hard kill from White brought Tech within four points at 14-10, but Texas pulled away and took a 19-12 lead. Dugan and Hill posted back-to-back kills and Boyer brought the Red Raiders within five points with another hard kill in the middle. Rohme and Kanas combined for late three kills, but the Red Raiders dropped the set 25-18 and fell behind 2-0 in the match.
SET THREE: Texas 25, Texas Tech 18
Thanks to an ace from Emerson Solano, the Red Raiders took their first lead of the day early in the third set. Texas evened up the match on the next play, but a hard Kanas kill put the Red Raiders up 3-2 over the Longhorns. After Texas pulled ahead 8-4, three consecutive points for the Red Raiders – a kill from Hill, an ace from White and a Longhorn error – kept Tech within striking distance. Dugan and Boyer threw up a block to cut into the Longhorns' lead, 9-8, and a Texas attack error two plays later kept Tech in the hunt. A huge block from White and Dugan, as well as a Texas attack error, put Tech within reach of the Longhorns' lead at 17-15, and another kill from Hill helped keep the Red Raiders within two points. However, Texas went on a final 7-2 run and the Red Raiders dropped the last set, 25-18.
