Kirby Hocutt's balance of family and athletics

Kirby Hocutt's balance of family and athletics

LUBBOCK, Texas -

With Red Raider sports on the rise, Texas Tech Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt's job has become busier than ever, but his priorities don't change. Just in the last year, most athletic programs have soared to new heights. Tech track won the school's first national championship, baseball had its highest win total at the College World Series, and basketball had its first national championship appearance. All at the hands of Kirby Hocutt.

But his highest priority in life; his sons Drew and Brooks.

"It's one of the best things in life, being a parent. Diane and I are so fortunate to have two great sons," Hocutt said.

Senior wide receiver Drew and defensive back Brooks are teammates on the Frenship Tigers, achieving their athletic goals, while Dad watches from the bleachers.

"I don't miss an event of theirs if I can," Hocutt said. "I try to find that balance and as busy as we get, I want to make sure I am present and engaged in their lives."

Drew and Brooks are appreciative of their fathers guidance.

"He's super supportive and always asks how practice went and how school went. He's always around." Drew said.

"We keep in touch good. He's always calling us and texting us," Brooks said.

Like most high school kids, Drew and Brooks aren't sure what they want to do with the rest of their lives. And that's alright with their dad.

"Whatever their future holds, they'll decide that, I just want them to do the very best they can with whatever it is they choose to do," Hocutt said.

As a senior, Drew is still unsure about where he wants to attend college. But Kirby didn't rule out the possibility of him becoming a Red Raider.
