Lubbock-Cooper heads back on the road for another cross-town battle with the Monterey Plainsmen on Thursday night.

The Pirates are coming off a 61-53 loss to Frenship in a 4-overtime thriller last Friday night. The LCP offense racked up 431 yards of total offense on 74 plays, threw for a season high 267 yards and a season high of passing touchdowns in the game.

The Plainsmen dropped a 60-27 road decision last week to Clovis, New Mexico. A game where the Wildcats led the Monterey 30-7 at halftime and broke school passing and receiving records on the evening. For Clovis it was the first win over a Lubbock area team since 2007.

Inside the series:

This will be the 4th meeting all-time between the two schools. Monterey leads the series over Lubbock-Cooper 2-1 winning the first two games, the Pirates won last year’s contest 35-25 at Pirate Stadium.


Scouting the Plainsmen:

Monterey is 2-1 on the season with impressive wins over Odessa High (55-13) on the road and Abilene Wylie (49-26) at home. The Plainsmen lead the area in several offensive statistics including passing yards (1096), total offense (1709) and yards per game (569.7). Senior quarterback Coreon Bailey leads the area in passing as he is 58-86 with 1096 yards passing and 10 touchdowns to 2 interceptions. MHS is its sixth season under head coach Wayne Hutchinson.

Thursday Storylines:

  • Lubbock-Cooper comes into the game ranked 9th in the Dave Campbell Texas Football Magazine rankings for Class 5A DII. LCP also checks in at number 9 in the AP Texas high school football rankings for 5A DII.
  • The Pirates are 20-3 against non-district opponents since the start of the 2015 season.
  • Lubbock-Cooper will be playing on Thursday night for the sixth time since 2014 and the third time in the last two seasons. In 2015, the Pirates travelled to Amarillo to play the Caprock Longhorns on October 1st, 2015, winning the game 55-7. In 2018, LCP travelled to Wichita Falls to play Old High on October 25th shutting out the Coyotes 38-0 and fell to Wichita Falls Rider 38-35 in the fourth round of the playoffs on December 7th.
  • Thursday’s game will be televised on LISD TV/Fox 34 News Now, it will be the 3rd time LCP has played on a televised game. The last two tv games were both in 2014, the Pirates played at Stephenville on September 18th and defeated the Yellow Jackets 50-39 on ESPN. On October 16th, Lubbock-Cooper topped district rival Lubbock High 34-14 on LISD TV/Fox 34 News Now.
  • The Pirate’s offense has scored at least 30 points in 16 of its last 17 games played.
  • Quarterback Cooper LaFebre was impressive in week 3 vs. Frenship especially through the air. The Junior went 17-23 with 254 yards and 4 touchdowns to four different receivers. LaFebre has also protected the ball all season long as he has zero interceptions through the first three games of the season.
  • Isaiah Johnson added two more rushing touchdown versus Frenship bringing his Lubbock-Cooper career total to 30. Johnson currently holds the single season rushing touchdown record (25) which he broke last season. The career rushing touchdown record is held by Nolan Savage (2010-’11) who scored 39 career touchdowns on the ground as a Pirate.
