LP&L: Nearly halfway done installing smart meters across the city

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

LP&L is about halfway done with its smart meter installations across the city.

Out of 107,000 electric meters, the utility reports its finished about 40% of them. Full installation started back in April. The city anticipates finishing the project by next Spring.

The Advanced Meter Infrastructure is intended to take all the guess-work and human error out of billing. It's supposed to provide more accurate readings than meter readers using binoculars.

"That meter is automatically read by collector that information sent back to the system, and this is done numerous times throughout the month. And so, you don't have just one read, you have multiple reads to base your, you know, bill at the end of the month off of," Matt Rose, LP&L Public Affairs and Government Relations Manager, said.

At the same time, the city's been installing smart water meters. For those concerned about workers visiting their homes, the city's posted pictures of each licensed installer online.
