Lubbock Christian University collected their first straight-set victory of the season and they completed the task in record-setting style for their home opener. LCU set a program record for digs in a three-set match with 89, behind career highs from Maddie DeGuire (26) and Bradi Marshall (24). Overall, the 89 digs is a season high for the Lady Chaps, who have won three straight matches on the season. Marshall completed a double-double, adding 29 assists to the 24 digs. LCU's dig effort led to SWOSU attacking at a .019 mark in the contest. They did receive a team-high 11 kills from Chezney Nielsen. LCU was led by Hannah Thomas, who had 13 kills, with Avery Moore and Ashley Vanfleet each missing out on double figures in kills with nine each.
How It Happened
LCU overcame 10 attack errors, a trio of serving errors and a 10-5 and 20-16 deficit in the opening set. Trailing 20-16, LCU called a timeout and responded with an 8-1 run, with Thomas producing all four of her kills in the set during the stretch. LCU claimed the set 25-23, with a kill by Vanfleet to avoid a late Bulldog surge. SWOSU had nine kills in the set, with Maicee Morgan (5) and Nielsen (4) accounting for all the work.
The Lady Chaps played from behind early in the second set, falling to a 4-0 deficit to start the match. They trailed as much as 12-6 before a kill by Thomas ignited a 6-0 run to help tie the set 12-12. The score would be tied on eight occasions, but not before LCU bounced back from a 23-20 deficit with an ace from DeGuire tying the game at 23-23. A kill by Thomas capped the 4-0 run, before LCU would eventually receive an ace by Jalee Sims on the team's second set-point serve to claim the set 26-24. Thomas produced seven kills in the set, edging out SWOSU's Nielsen's mark of six in the set. LCU had 39 digs in the set, with DeGuire digging 14 and Marshall providing 11 digs. Marshall had a double-double in the set alone with 13 assists and 11 digs.
LCU controlled the third and final set, with Avery Moore (5) and Vanfleet (4) combining for nine kills in the set. The Lady Chaps jumped out to an 8-3 lead, taking advantage of five SWOSU attack errors before Thomas served up an ace to cap the run. LCU led as much as 18-9 before cruising to a 25-17 set win to sweep the match.
Inside the Numbers:
4-2 – The meeting was the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs and LCU is now 4-2 against SWOSU.
8-3 – LCU won their first home opener since 2016 (also against SWOSU) and they are now 8-3 in home openers since 2008.
18 – Bradi Marshall's double-double was the 18th of her LCU career and she has posted doble-doubles in consecutive matches. The 24 digs topped her prior career-high mark of 18 (she had 18 twice in her career).
89 – LCU's 89 digs is the highest by a NCAA Division II program this season in a three-set match (the highest last season was 104 by Upper Iowa). The mark by LCU was the highest total in a three-set match by a Lone Star Conference program since Angelo State had 90 digs on Nov. 8, 2014 against LCU.
