Covenant Health creates online tool to help determine risk factors for heart disease

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality in the United States, followed closely by cancer and chronic respiratory diseases. In fact, heart disease causes almost 1 in 4 deaths in the U.S. this according to the American Heart Association.

Covenant Health now has an online 'heart risk assessment test'. It aims to teach and personalize the users risks for heart disease. All you have to do is put in your personal health information. Dr. Kyler Barkley, a cardiologist a Covenant Medical Group said this online test is user friendly and beneficial for everyone. Every person has their own risk factors and knowing them will help determine what lifestyle changes you need to make.

"If you can do something about your risk moving forward, why not," said Barkley. "Our goal is to prevent people from having a heart attack and you can't prevent it unless you know what your risk factors are and so this is a great model for anybody and everybody of all ages."

Barkley adds that heart disease tends to be a developing condition. It builds up over years before it becomes symptomatic and if treated it can prevent future problems. He points out that knowing your family's medical history is extremely important, this can determine how prone you are to developing this disease. Barkley recommends visiting with your family doctor and doing annual check ins.
