Scott Helps GB&I To Walker Cup Lead

HOYLAKE, England – Texas Tech senior Sandy Scott earned a 1-Up singles victory at The Walker Cup during Saturday's match play for the Great Britain & Ireland team at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. GB&I will carry a 7-5 lead over the United States into Sunday where the format will once again follow foursomes (alternate-shot) matches in the morning followed by singles matches in the afternoon to determine the championship.

Scott, who finished his singles round at 3-under-par, jumped out to a lead over Andy Ogletree by shooting 4-under on the front 9 and holding him off down the stretch. Up a stroke through 15 holes, Scott birdied the par 5, 548-yard No. 16 hole to go 2-Up. He bogeyed No. 17, but would matched Ogletree with a birdie on the finishing hole to secure the match play win.

First day highlights will air at 10 p.m. tonight on the Golf Channel. Scott will be paired with Walker again on Sunday at 8 a.m. (2 a.m., CT) before taking on Brandon Wu in singles play. A Stanford graduate, Wu is currently at No. 8 in the World Golf Amateur Rankings while Scott is No. 51.

Earlier in the first day of action at The Walker Cup, Scott and teammate Euan Walker dropped a 2&1 decision to John Pak and Isaiah Salinda in Foursomes. The match featured a 30-foot eagle putt and four birdies, but it wasn't enough as the US secured the win. GB&I and the US were tied at 2-2 going into singles play.

One full point is awarded for each victory, while a half-point is earned for matches that are all square after 18 holes. The USA needs 13 points to retain the Cup, while GB&I requires 13.5 points to reclaim it. The United States holds a 36-9-1 all-time advantage over Great Britain and Ireland in the biennial Walker Cup after earning a 19-7 win in 2017 at the Los Angeles Country Club after GB&I won the competition in 2015 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in England. Royal Liverpool, which was opened in 1869, last hosted the Walker Cup in 1983 with the USA earning a 13.5-10.5 win over GB&I.

A senior who is coming off an all-America campaign for the Red Raiders, Scott earned a victory at The Carmel Cup last weekend to begin the collegiate season. Texas Tech will play its second of four fall tournaments in two weeks at the Iverness Intercollegiate from Sept. 23-24 in Toledo, Ohio.
