Arrington says when it comes to gun violence 'what we can do, we should do'

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock Congressman Jodey Arrington said when it comes to gun violence "what we can do, we should do."

A guest of the Fox News Channel Tuesday, he said Texas lawmakers have focused on giving law enforcement better tools to coordinate. He also applauds them for hardening school security and improving background checks.

While the Odessa gunman didn't pass his background check and was able to get the gun through private sale, Arrington said some societal issues law won't fix.

"People have to be more aware, folks have to be more proactive, friends and families and folks in the community," he said. "There are things we can do, but we've got to prevent this knee jerk reaction that is going to do nothing but make people feel better and not have the impact that we all want. And worst of all potentially compromise our due process rights, our second amendment rights, etc."

He also said nearly all mass shootings occur in gun free zones. The congressman said it's about making sure law abiding citizens can protect themselves and intervene as a last resort.

He said it's why Texas has such a high standard when it comes to restricting the right to bear arms.
