Movie Review: It's time for you to see "Booksmart"

 "Booksmart" is a summer movie gem you probably missed in theaters. It's OK. It's now out for rent, so you can make it right.

"Booksmart" is a deeply funny and heartfelt high school comedy that some are calling the "female 'Superbad'."  Look, I get the comparison: it's about a pair of potty-mouthed teens wanting to party on the last night of high school and Jonah Hill's younger sister, Beanie Feldstein, even has a starring role.

But while "Superbad" has more laughs, "Booksmart" has a lot more going on with deeper characterization dealing with identity, acceptance, and preconceived notions of self and others.

The script is wickedly funny and raunchy with actress Olivia Wilde directing for the first time. This is a movie that will wind up finding a wider audience, especially now that it's out for rent. This is your notice to get in on the ground level with this one.

* * * * * Incredible - One of the best of the year
* * * * Excellent - Touches greatness with only minor quibbles
* * * Good - Plenty to like, definitely worth seeing
* * Mediocre - You can do better
* Awful - The worst, an insult to movies
