Covenant Health to offer 'allergy fair,' lung screenings

Posted:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Covenant Health will hold free educational sessions and lung screening checks Friday, August 30th, during its Allergy Fair.

They'll teach all types of allergens including airborne and foodborne, and the lung screenings will check for breathing problems like asthma. Doctors say this it's a good time to get tested during back-to-school and ahead of the fall allergy season.

When fighting allergies, a specialist said medications -- over-the-counter and prescription -- will only do so much, and suggested a longer-term solution.

"On the other hand, if you do allergy injections, they'll not only relieve the symptoms they'll also prevent future allergies, prevent the development of new allergies," Dr. Goutam Shome, with Covenant Health, said. "And more importantly what we're learning if you allergy injections and immunotherapy correctly, you can reduce the number of asthma development by about 50 percent."

A third of Americans have some type of environmental allergy. One in 100 people suffer from severe, life-threatening food allergies.

The fair is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second floor of the Covenant at 98th and Slide Rd.
