Salvation Army to reopen emPOWERment Center

LUBBOCK, Texas -

From the Salvation Army:

The Salvation Army is re-opening the emPOWERment center on Friday, August 30, at 8 a.m. The emPOWERment center is located in our men’s shelter on the corner of 17th and Ave. K.

We opened the emPOWERment center last summer to keep our clients cool. Our officer at the time noticed that several of our clients were out in the elements waiting for food services or charging their cell phones around our buildings in the blistering heat. He and our social services manager decided to clear out a room, turn on the Air conditioner, offer some water bottles and get the clients out of the elements. The room became our cooling station.

Erica Hitt, our social services manager wanted to do more with this room. She cleaned out an adjoining room and made it into a classroom. The room is used to bring in different groups that offer services to our clients, GED classes, health and dental services, cell phone services, and much more.

The emPOWERment had been closed for the past couple of months for remodeling. We have renovated the classroom and our bathrooms now have showers. Clients will now be able to come in get some clothes, a hygiene kit, and take a shower all in one place during the day.
