Shallowater ISD receives $25,000 grant for new floral program

Floral design is becoming a blooming industry nation-wide. The need for more florists has school districts like Shallowater shifting its programs to accommodate. The mustang floral curriculum is now considered a science, technology, engineering, and math program.

Shallowater ISD was awarded a $25,000 grant to enhance it's STEM programs through America's Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Bayer Fund. The process started with a farmer's nomination, this grant will create advanced courses, certifications, and entrepreneurship in plant science and floral design.

"We have a very thriving Ag department, but this gives them a whole new avenue somethings that they probably never had thought about actually being agriculture," said Meredith Couts, who leads Shallowater's Ag science department. "It is going to bring some of our non-traditional kids and show them there is a different path that actually leads to the Ag industry and how much impact it does have."

Students will not only learn how to design and create flower arrangements, but also learn the business side of running a flower shop. The program will allow students to get experience in starting a career. This will be the first year Shallowater has a course like floral design. Ms. Couts said the school district plans to expand the course next year.
