Jay Northcutt is entering year three as head football coach of Frenship. He saw progress last year in his second season, increasing the Tigers' win total by three.

"Our kids have come a long way. I've always told them and anyone else who will listen that the biggest asset that we have here is the commitment level of our kids. We're really looking for big things this year," Northcutt said.

In 2018, the Tigers were a lot younger. 11 sophomores played a starting role on varsity. Northcutt said that experience has helped them grow.

"This year we are made up of juniors and seniors on our varsity squad and we may have some sophomores mixed in for some depth. Experience is something that you can't substitute. That will make a big difference for us."

One of the reasons the third-year coach is optimistic about the season is the arrival of quarterback Donovan Smith. The transfer from Vegas has already made a strong impression.

"Really what I think that has set him apart is his character and the work ethic that he has brought in. He's been with us since early summer and he hasn't missed a workout. Not one. He's made all of our football sessions and he has put extra time in," Northcutt said.

"I think my biggest thing is my leadership rather than my skills because I am vocal with everybody and I make sure everybody is on the right page," Smith said. "If they feel like I'm a good leader they will really follow behind me. That's the biggest thing."

Smith's old team in Vegas ran similar plays to Frenship The adjustment has been relatively easy for him, and Northcutt has been blown away by what he brings to the field.

"In my career, I have been fortunate to have some other quarterbacks over the years and I would put him right at the top of that list. He's right up there," Northcutt said.

The Tigers will host Amarillo in their first game of the season August 30th.
