Lubbock ISD emphasizes message of safety as school year kicks off

LUBBOCK, Texas -

It is that time again: Getting back in the school routine.

The school year kicked off Wednesday for campuses across Lubbock ISD, and Stacy Carter, the district's school security director, said they have been preparing for this day all summer.

"We're just really excited to have kids back on our campuses and we just want to reassure our parents, our families, and our community members that they're safer today than they ever have been within our district," Carter said.

Carter said this means parents must also get reacclimated to school zone safety and start being aware of the when and where with kids on campus.

"Expect some delays. Typically, parents that don't drop off throughout the school year will always drop off that first day of school, so it's just about being mindful of the school areas and slowing down, and just watching out for our kiddos," Carter said.

The main message Carter said the district has for parents is just that: Watching out by keeping the cell phone down and eyes on the road.

"Our school zones are no-text zones or no-cell phone zones, so make sure you put those away, save that for later. We just want to make sure everybody's eyes are on the road, and are being aware of your surroundings and making sure you don't accidentally run into somebody or run into another car. A lot of doors opening, kids going in and out, so it's gonna be important to just be very alert as you travel through the school zones," Carter said.
