Monterey football has 'sour taste in mouth' after missing 2018 playoffs

After missing the playoffs last year, the Monterey Plainsmen are eager to prove to West Texas that they're better than a 4-6 team. Head coach Wayne Hutchinson has been pleased with senior QB Coreon Bailey's progress this offseason.

"He's put on about 10 lbs of muscle and he looks good. I think he has actually grown an inch and he looks really sharp. I think he's fixin' to have an awesome season," Hutchinson said.

After a standout 2018 campaign that included almost 1,000 rushing yards, Bailey has been working a lot to improve the most important part of his game; throwing the football.

"I've been working on the passing game and working on trying to be a better dual-threat quarterback so I can go play at the next level," Bailey said.

Hutchinson says the team still has a sour taste in it's mouth after missing the playoffs last year.

"When you watch a lot of other teams go and enjoy the playoffs and you know you put in a lot of hard work and don't get there, it's hard. Any time you have to go watch that it definitely motivates you in the spring. Our kids have responded well to that."

Bailey is confident that this year will be different.

"We've got a lot of players coming back and that's really going to be the key because we didn't have the experience this year like we have in past years. We've got seven returners on defense and three that played a whole lot," Bailey said.

One of those experienced players Monterey will heavily rely on is running back Dee Lacy. He averaged almost 100 yards per-game on the ground last year.

"He's a very explosive and elusive back. He's just as good in the backfield with his hands and he came into camp really in great shape. These last two days he's looked really sharp as well," Hutchinson said.

Monterey will take on Odessa in its first game of the season on August 30th.
