Lubbock-Cooper ISD highlights campus security

LUBBOCK, Texas -

It is the district's goal "day in, day out."

"We want to provide a safe learning environment where kids can come in and feel safe learning, and we want our teachers to feel safe teaching," Rick Saldana, Lubbock-Cooper ISD's Chief of Police, said.

The district has made several upgrades to its existing security, Saldana said. That includes video cameras throughout each campus, secure door systems and a phone app that notifies campus employees of an emergency.

The district also has certified peace officers who prioritize students' mental health, Saldana said.

"This past year we went through crisis intervention training, and what that does is that allows us more of an insight to situations that we deal with, we don't want to automatically go in and pinpoint something and make it something that it's not," he said.

It is especially important to listen to students when they are having a crisis, Saldana said.

"We don't ever want to make them feel like they're doing something bad by telling us, 'hey, I'm not having a good day, I'm not feeling good today. I need you to help me.' We're always going to look at the big picture," he said.

In light of the attacks on schools and crowds nationwide, Saldana said parents do have a right to be concerned, and the district is ready to respond to any situation.

The first bell rings Wednesday, Aug. 14.

"I don't ever want to come to a school district where fear is going to overtake comfort," Saldana said. "I feel very confidant, the 20 years I've served Lubbock-Cooper, that we have people in place, we have a caring school community, we work good with our teachers, our administrators, our support staff, and when you put all those layers together, it provides for a safer environment."
