Parr looks to fill void of WR Blair Conwright

Following a playoff run that was ended by Denton Ryan for the second consecutive season, the Coronado Mustangs are gearing up for their 2019 campaign. They'll be playing this year without star wide receiver Blair Conwright, who had 100 receptions for 1,472 yards with a whopping 25 touchdowns last season before graduating last May. Head coach Seth Parr has to deal with star players graduating all the time.

"You don't ever really replace a Blair. What we have to do is have production at other positions and maintain numbers that will account for his," Parr said.

A key returner, junior QB Sawyer Robertson, dominated in his sophomore season. He averaged 297 yards per game through the air, along with 43 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions.

"He's a real good football player. He's 6'4 and 200 lbs but he can also run and really throw it. I don't know if we've even tapped his ceiling yet and all he has to do is be the best version of himself," Parr said.

For Robertson, the bond he has with his coach is bigger than football.

"He's been working with me for so long and I would love to go somewhere and play just to make him proud. I think it'd be really cool," Roberston said.

Parr said the team is trying to figure out depth, specifically with the first and second teamers. He said the first team is already set and there's still work to be done.

"We gotta have our broken plays and our scramble drills cleaned up. I think we were like 6 for 30 last year so if we can just complete 10 to 15 more, that's some more production."

Coronado opens up the season August 30th against Estacado.
