LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock County commissioners have several items to discuss at its next meeting, Monday, Aug. 12 at 10 a.m.

This includes its own salaries, expenses and other allowances; setting these rates affects other elected offices.

Commissioners will also consider the property tax rate for next year.

Last year commissioners set the rate at 34.8086 cents per $100 valuation. The effective rate, or the rate that would generate roughly the same revenue from property on the appraisal roll both last year and this year, is 33.9978 cents per $100 valuation.

The court will consider establishing a veterans court. It's a program put forth by some Texas Tech grad students. It would serve former service members who've been charged with crimes and help them stay out of jail, in certain circumstances.

Here is an earlier report on the proposed veterans court.

Later in the day there will be a budget work session. It will focus on volunteer fire departments in Lubbock. The work session begins at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
