Retailers prepare for tax-free weekend

Tax-free weekend began Friday and will go through the weekend. The items range from clothing, accessories, shoes and school supplies.

"We do have extended hours for the weekend so Friday and Saturday," Beth Bridges, the South Plains Mall property manager said. "We're open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday we are open from 11 a.m to 6 p.m. to accommodate all the people looking to cash in for the tax free savings."

While Bridges and the South Plains Mall are gearing up for a massive shopping weekend, the hottest items on the market are a common denominator for retailers across the city.

"Most of the people out here are shopping for their kiddos and back to school clothes. Kids grow over the summer so it's time for them to get their new school uniforms or their new clothes or whatever they may need for the year," Bridges said.

Along with back to school supplies, stores will often have other strategies to get more people to buy during the already busy weekend.

"In addition to the tax-free savings, a lot of our stores already have sales and may be getting rid of some summer product to get the fall product in. There are great sales that are happening," Bridges said.

Retailers say if you want to avoid the crowds and cash in on tax-free weekend to come in before 10 a.m.
