Cluley gears up for second season as Estacado's HC

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Estacado football is beginning year two of the Joe Cluley era. The Matadors are coming off a season where they fell just short to Glen Rose in the 4A Division II regional semifinals.

"You lose a game by less than a touchdown and every play mattered and I think our kids are taking that to heart through the offseason," Cluley said.

While his team has moved on from the loss, the quarterback battle is a two-man race between Colby Sims and Jay'Lon Dobbins. Cluley has been pleased with what he's seen so far.

"They're both getting reps with the ones and the twos. Obviously Jay'Lon has 10 games under his belt which will help him a lot but they both have their differences that make them separate themselves," Cluley said.

Jay'Lon's half-brother, RB Jeremiah Dobbins, is returning after an impressive 2018 campaign. He average 7.1 yards per carry and tacked on 1,443 yards and 17 TDs.

"We've got a young offensive line with some inexperience so having a guy who can not only take pressure off the offensive line but also the quarterbacks, I think it will be really good for us," Cluley said.

The focus remains to be on building the foundation of the program.

"We're going to make a ton of mistakes here early and that's OK because we're going to stay positive with each other and do the fundamental things to win football games and we'll build off that."

Estacado opens the 2019 season against Coronado on August 30th.
