SHALLOWATER, Texas -

The Shallowater Mustangs lost 23 seniors to graduation, following the 13-1 season that ended in the state quarterfinals. The loss of several key players leaves a lot of question marks for third year head coach, Bryan Wood.

"Little competition at quarterback between a few guys and we're going to see who fits the best and who has the best few weeks," Wood said. "We've got a lot of inexperience, going to start some sophomores so we've got a lot of growing up to do in seven to eight weeks to do it before district play."

According to Wood, the inexperience at the varsity level has caused him to adjust the game to the talent he has. Last year the team ran the ball 70 percent of the time and passed it 30 percent of the time. At the start of two-a-days, the team is practicing 50/50.

"With the quarterback position being in question you know that's a key factor and then if that guy doesn't make the quarterback, where does he fit in to the receiver corps or where is he at secondary wise," Wood added.

Wood's message to the team at the start of two-a-days is similar to Matt Wells. He calls it he beginning of the fourth quarter. He hopes this group can match the same work-ethic from last year's team.

"Certainly the wins that have happened in the past are something that set the bar high, but the expectation for these guys and what will be preached everyday is to find your spot and your role and do it with great effort," Wood stressed.

The Mustangs open up the season at Idalou, August 30th at 7:30 P.M..
