Man indicted in shooting of Seagraves Police officer

A Gaines County grand jury indicted a man accused of shooting a Seagraves Police officer and also ruled the officer's actions were justified.

On the night of April 29, Officer Matthew Zalewski pulled over Daniel Garcia near 9th Street and Avenue J in Seagraves, about 60 miles southwest of Lubbock. Investigators say Garcia tried to get away and fired shots at Zalewski; the officer was hit. Officer Zalewski returned fire, hitting Garcia.

By the next morning the officer was reported stable. The suspect's wounds were more serious, as of the next day.

Garcia is indicted on a charge of attempted capital murder of a police officer and aggravated assault on a peace officer, according to a news release from Seagraves PD.
