Leading and learning; Lubbock ISD hosts Summer Leadership Institute

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock ISD is celebrating what it calls it's decade of leading and learning. It's rallying teachers and administrators for a three day leadership summit, content focus sessions, instructional coaching are all a part of this event.

"They'll have the opportunity to really spend some intensive time with their campus teams, taking a lot of the work and looking at how they can apply it and improve their campuses," said Anna Jackson, Lubbock ISD executive director of leadership and professional development. "They'll be developing their campus improvement plans, then we also have the opportunity to hear from some more great keynote sessions and to have some break out sessions so lots of great things ahead."

This is also the first time the school district is implementing a social and emotional facet into its learning approach. Heather Monkres a biology teacher at Estacado High plans to implement this idea in her classroom.

"From SLI I am taking back that social, emotional learning where I am going to understand my students on a deeper level that way I can make sure that they are doing the best personally," said Monkres. "That way when I am teaching them I have all aspects taken care of and I can just get the biology across to them."

The district will keep pushing training throughout the year. It's to fine tune and tailor the learning experience for each student.
