Almost 10,000 Texas are in need of an organ transplant. LifeGift of Lubbock is hosting its third 2nd Chance Run Saturday to share how signing up to be an organ donor can save lives.
Before Terri Contreras' daughter passed away, she said she wanted to donate organs. She saved five lives.
It also developed a relationship with her liver recipient. Terri's husband Juan walked her down the isle and had the first dance at her wedding.
Years later, Juan was in need of a liver transplant. After eight years of waiting, he received a perfect match and now lives a healthy life.
"We found it very comforting to able to know that her passing was not for not. She was a very giving and generous person that it seemed fitting for that to be her last bit of generosity," Terri said. "For us it's been life changing and totally life saving."
She stresses the importance of letting loved ones if you want to be an organ donor to alleviate stress.
The race is at Mackenzie Park Sat., Aug. 3, at 7 a.m.
