More than Just a Meal: LMOW caring for elders

More than just a meal: LMOW caring for elders

LUBBOCK, Texas -

It is a Monday ritual for Jerry and Tina Overman to get in their car, take a drive, and deliver lunches for Lubbock Meals on Wheels.

"I'm 78 years old, so there may be a time that I have to be on the receiving end," Jerry said. "So right now it is a very good blessing to us to provide the help we can."

Their work does not go unnoticed. It is not just a warm meal these elders look forward to, but a familiar face and the comfort of knowing someone is always there to check up on them.

"Most of them are not in good health, so it's kind of a day to day thing to see that they are okay," Overman said.

For Ramon Banda and his wife, it is one less thing for them to worry about. He is struggling with his health and his spouse is often busy caring for him.

"Of course in our case, in our situation, it's something that helps us," Banda said.

Especially in this hot weather, it is relieving to know if something went wrong with their AC, Meals on Wheels would step in.

"They always ask how we are doing in that particular situation, if our cooling system is working right or you know," Banda said. "So they have been very nice about that."

The organization has employees dedicated to referring clients to people who can help. If a client is in immediate danger, volunteers know what to do.

"They have people they can call, they know emergency contacts," Executive Director Lisa Gilliland said. "They can call us, and as well as knowing not to leave a meal outside in this kind of heat because the food safety is important as well."

While it is just an hour or so out of the Overman's day, it is always something to look forward to.
