John Gatica files application for Slaton Mayor

SLATON, Texas -

(Press Release)

John Gatica has formally filed his bid for Mayor of Slaton and states that he is eager to begin his campaign.

Gatica was born and raised in Slaton, Texas. He is the youngest of six children born to Pedro and Pauline Gatica. His siblings are the late Teresa Hernandez, Joe Gatica, Jesse “Sugar Bear” Gatica, Mary Ann Valdez and James Gatica. John has been married to Irma Gatica for 35 years and has 3 children Mikel 31, Veronica 29 and Tomas 27. John has two grandchildren Marcos 11 and Lucas 1.

As a student in the Slaton Public Schools, John graduated with honors in 1981. He was the president of the Spanish Club and Vice-President of the Class of 1981. John continued his post-secondary studies at Texas Tech University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in education and a Master’s in Educational Administration. John would be selected to study at Harvard University and is an alum of the Oxford Roundtable at Oxford University, England.

John would return home in 1987 to teach and coach in the Slaton Public Schools. During his tenure, John would volunteer his time as a leader with the Boy Scouts of America, a baseball coach with the Slaton Little League, and a coach with the Slaton Little Dribblers Basketball League. John would later be elected to the Slaton School Board, the Texas Tech Chancellors advisory council, the South Plains College advisory council and the Lubbock Hispanic Chamber of Commerce board of directors. John continued his community service as a Plainview City Council member, a member of the Uvalde Lions Club International and most recently a Rotarian in Plainview, Texas

Today, John seeks to continue his public service as Mayor of Slaton. John’s fundamental focus as Mayor is community engagement. His interest is in creating a 5 year strategic plan that focuses on community concerns that allow him as Mayor to be held accountable to the citizens of Slaton. The plan would serve as a guideline and an assessment tool for the Mayor, the City Manager, and the City Commissioners. The strategic plan would be created by numerous community stakeholders through public forums that would be held in all corners of the Slaton community. This input would be compiled and codified into an action plan for the city leaders.

Secondly, John’s interest is in educating the community on the dynamics of city government. In this area his focus would be on youth. He understands that planting seeds of public service in the

minds of youth would yield a generation of voters and public servants. John would like to create a mock youth council that includes Slaton high school students. John feels that it is imperative that youth understand the dynamics of local government and more importantly the benefits of public service.

Finally, John’s understanding of inclusion would provide every area of Slaton an opportunity to speak directly to him. It is in these public forums where he would gain insight on the direction and immediate priorities of his leadership.
