How to avoid fines at city parks

LUBBOCK, Texas -

There are more than 80 parks across Lubbock, and while this green space is for everyone to enjoy, it is important that residents understand the rules and regulations that exist.

"We rely on the public to help us keep our parks looking great," Nancy Neill, city staffer with the Department of Parks and Recreation, said. "Of course no alcohol in our parks or glass containers. We also ask them not to drive on any of our park property, the majority of our parks have irrigation systems and that can certainly damage the sprinkler heads."

Along with no drinking and parking on park property, the city also has strict rules when it comes to swimming, fishing and boating at parks that consist of a playa lake. Breaking these rules can result in fines up to $500, an arrest and even the impoundment of vehicles.

"We do want folks to abide by those rules," Neill said. "Some of our parks have the complete list of rules some have warnings, certainly they are there for a reason to let you know so you don't violate those rules."

The city's parks and recreation department has an interactive parks map. It allows residents to explore and find information about walking trails, playgrounds, and playa lakes along with city codes and ordinances.
