New Mexico State Police:

New Mexico State Police were contacted to investigate an aggravated assault involving a corrections officer and a sergeant at the South New Mexico Correctional Facility Tuesday.

Investigators report around 7:30 p.m., a prison nurse, escorted by a sergeant and officer, entered a pod to deliver medicine to inmates when an inmate got into an argument with the officer.

Investigators report later, when the officer and sergeant returned, they were attacked by five inmates.

The control officer responded by using less lethal shotgun and pepper ball grenades to stop the attack, according to investigators. A facility team responded and secured the pod.

Investigators identified the five inmates as Gabriel Sedillo, 47, Rico Sena, 32, Robert Dyment, 35, Martin Cuevas, 35, and Irvin Ramirez, 26.

The two correctional officers were taken to the hospital with severe non-life-threatening injuries.
