Lubbock ISD: Funding for full-day pre-K is a game changer

LUBBOCK, Texas -

One of the biggest highlights of this year's Texas legislative session: School finance reform.

"This one law does more to advance education in Texas than any law I have seen in my adult lifetime in the state of Texas," Gov. Abbott said.

At the heart of House Bill 3 is funding set aside for full-day pre-K.

Sue Beene, the early childhood coordinator for Lubbock ISD, said it is good to see lawmakers put our future at the forefront.

"It really gives kids a head start and jump start into their school career. It's really valuable, and I appreciate the fact that they have now acknowledged that," Beene said.

In fact, recent data shows children who attend pre-K are 48 percent more likely to obtain a college degree.

"Just developmentally, it's so important for them. They get to interact with other students and learn a lot of social-emotional skills that maybe playing at home doesn't provide for them," Beene said.

Beene said for most low-income families, the signing of HB-3 now means their kids will have the same opportunity as others.

"It's really going to help close the gap before they start kindergarten. More kids will be able to access it, not just the ones who can afford to be picked up and dropped half a day, but now they have the advantage of staying all day, and that will be good for families," Beene said.

Beene said Lubbock ISD already uses general funds for full-day pre-K, but with the state's help, this will provide a huge financial boost for students at all grade levels.
