Academy honors fallen officers through Shop with a Cop shopping spree

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Academy Sports + Outdoors donated $500 to a first responders support organization and gave 10 kids from the Boys & Girls Club of Lubbock a chance to spend $2,000 in gift cards.

It's part of Academy's partnership with Texas 635, an organization founded in honor of fallen Texas Tech police officer Floyd East Jr. His widow organized the non-profit to provide money for families of first responders killed in the line of duty.

A Corporal at Tech PD said the event helps join kids with the men that protect them.

"I know good and well, we'll see them do good in the community, some place," Cpl. Oswalt said. "So we're hoping they'll come out and talk to us and let us know hey, we're glad you're here for us. We're glad they're here. It's been a lot of fun."

The shopping spree for kids intended to go toward school supplies. Along with Tech PD, Lubbock police and the Lubbock Christian University Police Department chipped in to help the kids buy what they need, not just what they want.
