Covenant Health hosts Stop the Bleed education course

LUBBOCK, Texas -

It only takes five minutes for a person to bleed to death before paramedics arrive on scene.

To educate others on the importance of knowing what to do in the case of a medical emergency, the Emergency Nursing Association hosted a free course on the proper way to apply a tourniquet and stop the bleed.

The course was hosted at Covenant Health, with medical personnel from across the state spreading this message.

"A lot of times people will bleed to death before EMS gets there. And if it's within the extremities this is things we can stop," Chad Curry, Training Chief UMC EMS, said. "And so the better chance we have - it's no different than CPR - the sooner we can start CPR, the sooner we can stop bleeding and the better chances people have of living."

Curry said a recent law passed will now require a CPR certificate to graduate high school. Students are mandated to take a Stop the Bleed course. That will start this fall.
