Jordan is 'Confident in planning stages' of Expo Center

LUBBOCK, Texas -

County leaders met with the Expo Center's Steering Committee for updates. There have been bumps in the road, but organizers are optimistic.

Randy Jordan is the head of the committee. He said he's confident in its current status.

"A lot of groundwork has been done on design and now it is time to fine-tune this design," Jordan said.

There are other short-term issues they are working out, and the rodeo's location in 2020 isn't the only one.

"We don't have a home for several things so our concern is we move in an effective manner and get things going and stay positive and that's what we are," Jordan said. "I just want to ensure to the people of Lubbock County that we are moving forward with the Lubbock Expo Center. It will happen."

Jordan said a project of this size can have timeline issues, so they're meeting with the county again at the end of the month to cement a plan into place.

"Now we just need to meet with the architects. We have 90 days to get that going, 90 days to do the feasibility study and bring the contractor in play and then it's going to take 18 months to build it," he said.

The hope is for the Expo Center to be open by 2021. The next meeting for some more planning is scheduled for July 22.
