Behind the Celebration: First responders work to ensure citizens' safety on Independence Day

Posted:

Despite the heat, hundreds came out to celebrate the nation's independence.

The patriotic showings kicked off in Lubbock with the Sonic Parade, followed by numerous day-long events at Mackenzie Park.

"It's a joint effort, there are several agencies and several volunteers who all take part into making something like this happen," Cpl. Sam Reedy with Lubbock Police Department said.

LPD, EMS and LFR were present throughout the park, directing traffic and overseeing the large crowd.

Preparing for all this begins a year in advance.

"On our part, it takes a lot of planning," Donnie Henry, senior field training officer with University Medical Center EMS, said. "Today, we have 13 here on staff, we have our mass casualty bus."

"Today, we showed up at six in the morning," Steve Holland, division chief for Lubbock Fire Rescue, said. "We have two kubotas with two firefighters each patrolling the area for medical or small fire calls."

So far, there have been no major emergencies, Holland said.

"We actually had treated a dog earlier today, was overheated, had to give him a little oxygen..." Holland said. "We had one fall today that resulted in a transport to the hospital there, but other than that, its just been minor stuff."

They also described what Independence Day meant to them.

"It's  a time to celebrate America and all that we have," Holland said. "Being able to live here in the United States."

"For us, it's a really neat opportunity to reflect on our freedom, and the opportunity that we all have to be who we are," Reedy said.

"We have several of our staff that are former military, and they went and fought, and that's what I celebrate," Henry said. "My fellow workers, and every other American that's gone to fought for our freedom."
