Auto thefts spike during summer months

LUBBOCK, Texas -

The state is advising everyone to watch their cars this month, as July is the month when the greatest number of vehicles are stolen each year.

Jennifer Anderson, crime analyst with the South Plains Auto Theft Task Force, said so far this year, there have been 630 vehicles reported stolen in Lubbock.

"Lubbock is ranked number one in the state," Anderson said. "Back in May, we had 102 stolen vehicles."

Police report more than a hundred auto thefts each month.

"It's really a crime of opportunity," Tiffany Taylor, public information officer with the Lubbock Police Department, said. "The suspect may be in the area. They see a vehicle unoccupied, running, they open up the door, and they take off."

It gets worse during the summer months, Taylor said.

"People will leave their vehicle running for it to cool off during the summer. They think they can just leave it for a couple of minutes and it'll be fine, but really, it only takes seconds for that criminal to hop in the car and take off," Taylor said.

To shield your car from criminals, never leave the keys inside, she said. That includes spares.

"About 35 to 40 percent of the vehicle thefts we investigate, the keys were left inside, whether it was running or not," Taylor said.

Make sure any belongings and valuables are removed the vehicle as well, Anderson said.

"Lock your doors, roll your windows up. If you have to have something in the car, cover it up," Anderson said.

Anyone who suspects their car has been stolen should have details ready for police, such as the make and model, as well as the vehicle ID number. That will help police track it down.
