ATMOS Energy donates $5K to Lubbock's Monument of Courage

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Construction for Lubbock's Monument of Courage is now fully funded.

ATMOS Energy pitched in thousands of dollars to complete it. $5,000 will go toward the project honoring 11 medal of honor recipients in the South Plains.

It will also commemorate families who have lost a loved one to war and service members wounded in combat.

The memorial's commemorations go all the way back to the 1800's.

"We fold our flag in that triangle because we honor the patriots of the past," Benny Guerrero, with Veterans of Foreign Wars, said. "You know, George Washington wore a hat that looks like our flag that we fold today, so we fold the flag in their honor. We just never want to forget the cost of freedom, because we're just that one generation from losing it."

The monument is expected to be unveiled in November. It will be at the Lubbock Area War Memorial near 82nd Street and Nashville Ave.

The 'Remember Our Heroes' group will continue fundraising for insurance coverage and maintenance.
