Snyder activist to challenge Rep. Dustin Burrows in 2020

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock State Representative Dustin Burrows could have a challenger next year.

Addison Perry-Franks declared her candidacy for House District 83 Monday afternoon. The Democrat from Snyder is an LGBT activist and a small business owner.

Perry-Franks said she's running for equality and unity in equal rights for the LGBT community, minorities and women's rights.

She targeted Burrow's work on property tax and school finance reform saying rural areas, like in District 83, won't benefit the way Burrows said they would.

"Scurry County, right now is trying to figure out how to do road repairs because, after talking to the people there, they had almost figured out their budget when it hit, and then they'll have to change budgets too far," she said.

Perry-Franks said even what was supposed to be a home run bill for all state teachers, school finance reform failed rural districts.

"Eddie Bland, the school superintendent in Snyder, said the numbers don't match up, because they would need another $800,000 to be able to give the teachers a $4,000 raise," she said, "and after carefully doing the math with him, the teachers are roughly getting at $1,300 raise, which is not what the teachers expected from the bill."

Representative Burrows hasn't made a formal announcement for re-election.
