South Plains College to host annual Camp Bluegrass July 14-19

(Press Release)

South Plains College will host the 34th Annual Camp Bluegrass July 14-19 (Sunday through Friday). The camp will feature the music of the Carter Family.

The Carter Family made their first recordings on Aug. 1, 1927. A.P. Carter persuaded his wife Sara and his sister-in-law Maybelle to travel from Virginia to Tennessee to audition for a record producer. The band received $50 for each song recorded, plus half a cent royalty on every copy sold of each song they had registered a copyright. On Nov. 4, 1927, a double-sided recording of the group’s “Wandering Boy” and “Poor Orphan Child” were released. "The Storms Are on the Ocean" and Single Girl, Married Girl” were released on Dec. 2, 1928. By the end of 1930, the Carter Family had sold 300,000 records in the United States. They were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and given the nickname of First Family in Country Music.

This six-day residential camp attracts bluegrass musicians from across the nation. Campers stay in residence halls on campus as well as in conveniently located RV sites with food service provided in the SPC Cafeteria. Motels also are available in town.

The camp includes workshops to improve individual skills of banjo, guitar and mandolin players. Also, classes will be provided for fiddle, Dobro, bass and vocals. This year the camp will offer songwriting classes as well as the traditional slow jam sessions. Emphasis is placed on perfecting individual skills and addressing individual musical concerns. Classes are conducted in the Commercial Music building with nightly faculty performances in the Tom T. Hall Production Studio.
