Mayor Pope hosts Lemonade with the Mayor, promotes young readership

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Some of Lubbock's youngest residents got the chance to drink lemonade and meet with the Mayor.

Mayor Dan Pope was as the Godeke Branch Library Thursday to host Lemonade with the Mayor. The event encouraged kids and their parents to visit the public library while meeting the man in charge.

"We know that reading, particularly being proficient in reading by third grade, has a big determination on someone's success in life as anything else," Mayor Pope said. "So it's very important that we support reading and that it is done in our homes, that it is done with our parents, that it is done in our schools, and our churches and our not-for-profits."

The city's library department hosts summer reading programs throughout the break. Kids and parents can still sign up at any of Lubbock's four library locations.
