U.S Assistant Secretary of Commerce visits Lubbock to share progress of USMCA and China trade talks

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Since he stepped into the White House, President Trump has made trade one of the top priorities in his administration.

Negotiations with China are heating up, and the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA) has taken a huge step towards completion.

President Trump congratulated Mexico on becoming the first country to ratify the USMCA last week, urging Congress to do the same.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce John Fleming said this means the nation is one step closer to getting out of trade deals like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which he said he believes have been unfair to the American worker.

"It's time that Americans take care of Americans. I agree with the President's 'America First' policy and that we should take care of American jobs and families first, and as a result of that, I think that renegotiating these trade deals is certainly timely and past due," Fleming said.

Fleming visited Lubbock to praise the economic development in West Texas, and he said the USMCA will increase job growth to new heights.

"Well you can see what's happening around us in Lubbock and Central Texas itself, and I think that's actually going to accelerate as we get reciprocal trading and much fairer trading practices," Fleming said.

When it comes to China, Fleming said he acknowledges the pressure that has been added on farmers during these negotiations, but he said the long-term gain will make all the difference.

"We're going to see right over the horizon -- a very bright sunrise, where markets are going to open up all around the world as a result of the trade negotiations that are happening as we speak today," Fleming said.

President Trump is set to hold meetings with world leaders about trade at this week's G-20 Summit, including with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
