Arrington: 'Shop Rx Act' would provide transparency in Medicare prescription costs

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock Congressman Jodey Arrington wants seniors to know how much a prescription will cost before the paper's filled out.

He introduced the Shop Rx Act and would require sponsors of prescription drug plans to offer real time benefit information for Medicare beneficiaries.

It would include price transparency tools to let doctors know how much a drug costs, as well as alternatives. Arrington said Medicare patients have been unfairly subjected to a confusing process to get the right drug at the right price.

"The reason our health care system doesn't function like a real market is because one of the operative conditions of a free market - namely, the ability for consumers to make educated and informed decisions, have bargaining power and shop around for different products - doesn't really exist," he said.

Three in every 10 Americans stop filing their prescriptions due to the costs, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Three quarters of patients report their medicine costs more than they expected.
