Statistics show school bus safety is more about waiting than riding

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Riding the bus to class is something millions of students do each school day.

That means the lives of these children are in a bus driver's hands when they take a seat, but statistics show the real danger is before and after the ride.

The U.S. Department of Transportation reported one in four of all school bus related injuries involve kids getting on or off the bus itself.

Durham School Bus Services currently provides the service for Lubbock ISD who owns the buses.

Laura Cortez, the general manager, said this statistic needs to be a wake-up call for parents.

"If I can tell the parents anything, it's to just continue educating your children. Everything you tell them in regards to crossing the street when you're going into the mall, all those same rules apply to the school bus," Cortez said.

She said these rules may sound simple, but parents must keep reminding their children about the danger of getting on and off the bus.

"When you're dropping your kids off, just make sure that before you say goodbye, go over a couple of rules: Look both ways, make sure that cars aren't coming. We're doing our part as drivers making sure that when we wave your child on the bus or getting them off the bus, we're taking a look at our mirrors to make sure that cars are stopped," Cortez said.

Cortez added the responsibility also falls on the driver, but she said that mentality is instilled in them before they start picking up kids.

"We go through 20 hours of classroom training. We go through 40 hours of behind-the-wheel training. So before these drivers even get on the road, they've gone through an extensive amount of training, and we know we're putting the best drivers on the road," Cortez said.

School starts back up for most schools across the nation in a month and change, and Cortez said her message to drivers and parents is the same each year: Your attentiveness can make all the difference.
