Service held for Slaton businesses destroyed in fire

SLATON, Texas -

It has been more than a week since a fire destroyed two Slaton businesses and damaged others.

Sunday, multiple congregations held a service for those business owners. One of those owners, Rodney Klemke said it was difficult to see 31 years suddenly gone.

He said within 30 minutes, the future for this business became unknown.

"It wasn't what am I going to do for myself?" Hayley Klemke said. "It was what am I going to do for my employees?"

That has been the mindset Rodney has kept throughout his years as a businessman. In January, he had to make a tough decision whether to pay employees or insurance. He chose to pay employees.

"You've got the community and you've got the lord," Klemke said. "So you've got to take care of it."

Just steps away from the sight of devastation, the town prayed, donated, and comforted their neighbors.

"We're here to support one another and love one another as one of our great commandments," Sherrell Wilson, owner of Slaton Bakery said.

It is giving hope to the Klemke's, as they figure out what is next.

"We're not going to give up, the lord's given us a direction," Klemkee said. "We've just got a bump in the road right now."

The family owns a BBQ joint as well and are now shifting their focus to building that business.
