Hotel-motel tax to go into effect in July, funds Lubbock County Expo Center

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Airbnb renters in Lubbock County can expect a notice in the mail. Next month, taxes on rooms will go up by two percent.

Voters approved the increase to pay for the Lubbock County Expo Center in May. It includes hotels, motels and other lodging. The increase will go into effect July 1.

With that money coming in, the next step is to finish creating the public-private partnership. Then an executive committee will take over.

"Going out and getting those plans together, talking to the community, solidifying those plans, directions and vision turning the vision into plans on paper then turning those plans on paper into actual bricks and mortar. And I'm looking forward to that," Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish said.

Additionally. the car rental tax will go up five percentage points. Parrish expects ground will be broken on the Expo Center by this time next year.
