LPD makes arrest in weekend shooting death

(LUBBOCK, TX) – Chance Copeland, 30, is now in custody charged with the murder of 37-year-old Cassie Oden.  Copeland was arrested at approximately 2:15 a.m. this morning at the Stonehollow Apartments located in the 1500 block of East Cornell Street.

Oden was pronounced deceased just after midnight on Monday, June 3rd after being shot in the 400 block of MLK Boulevard. A second victim, 24-year-old Preston Beadman, was taken by a private vehicle to the hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound. Through the investigation, it appeared a suspect had fired multiple gunshots at the vehicle occupied by Oden, Beadman and two others.

Detectives with the Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit were able to quickly identify Copeland as the suspected shooter. On Tuesday night, less than 48 hours after the shooting, investigators were able to secure a warrant for his arrest with the charge of murder.

Metro investigators continued searching for Copeland and with the assistance of LPD SWAT, Copeland was located and arrested in the early morning hours of June 5th.

This murder remains under investigation by the Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit, a partnership consisting of LPD and Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office investigators.
